Why We Built This

Hi, I’m Johan Lammers, the founder of Sensory Overload. I’m in my mid-40s and earned my MSc in Psychology from the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked for a training & consultancy firm in development cooperation, with UNICEF HQ in New York and currently as an organisational development adviser for a government agency in the Netherlands. Beneath professional achievements, I spent decades masking significant struggles.

For over 40 years, I privately battled intense anxiety, inner turmoil, and constant difficulties with the most simple tasks. Outwardly, I appeared “successful” and functional because I was very good in masking my symptoms; inwardly, however, I constantly grappled with sensory overload, confusion, shutdowns, and executive function problems.

After a mental breakdown and therapy at 42, I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism—a transformative revelation. This diagnosis helped me understand myself better, leading me to more therapy, medication, and practical ways to accommodate my needs with greater compassion and less shame.

I created Sensory Overload because it’s the resource I wish I’d always had. Combining my personal journey and professional expertise, this platform offers practical support for sensitive minds like mine—and perhaps yours too.
