AuDHD is discussed everywhere.
But not every explanation you hear online is equally well supported.
This course helps you understand what research currently shows about co-occurring autism and ADHD — across genetics, brain research, executive function, sensory processing, emotional regulation, masking, mental health, treatment, and adult outcomes.
Just as importantly, you will learn where the evidence is still developing and where popular AuDHD explanations go further than the research currently supports.

🟣 AuDHD science is more complicated than “autism + ADHD”
Autism and ADHD frequently occur together.
They also share parts of their genetic architecture and overlap across several cognitive, sensory, and emotional domains.
But that does not mean science has identified one universal “AuDHD brain.”
Research shows substantial variation between people.
Some findings come from people formally diagnosed with both autism and ADHD.
Others come from autism-only research, ADHD-only research, trait studies, child samples, or emerging adult studies.
Throughout this course, you will learn to tell those different levels of evidence apart.
We use a simple evidence framework:

So you do not just learn what a study says.
You learn how confident we can reasonably be in the conclusion.

Start with the foundations.
You will learn what “AuDHD” means in research, why autism and ADHD were historically studied separately, how the evidence base developed, and how to judge the strength of a scientific claim.

2. Why Autism and ADHD Occur Together
Explore why autism and ADHD co-occur far more often than chance alone would suggest.
You will examine:

🧩 why there is no single AuDHD profile
3. Genetics, Brain Differences & Neurobiology
Move beyond simplified claims about “the AuDHD brain.”
You will explore:

🧠 brain structure and connectivity research
🏆 reward, arousal, and attention regulation
🔬 what neuroimaging can — and cannot — prove
You will also learn why brain scans currently cannot diagnose AuDHD or tell an individual exactly how their brain works.
4. Cognitive, Sensory & Emotional Research
This lesson looks at some of the most recognizable AuDHD experiences.
You will examine the evidence behind:

🔀 apparently contradictory AuDHD traits

Why can someone need structure but struggle to maintain it?
Why can the same person seek stimulation and become overwhelmed by it?
And how much of the popular explanation is actually supported by research?
5. Adults, Masking & Identification
Adult AuDHD can be difficult to recognize.
This lesson explores:

🎭 masking and camouflaging
🔎 why one condition can obscure the other
♀️ sex, gender, and recognition bias
You will also learn why late identification does not necessarily mean every earlier diagnosis was wrong.
6. Mental Health, Comorbidity & Diagnostic Overlap
Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, and other mental-health difficulties are common in neurodivergent populations.
But overlapping symptoms do not always have the same cause.
You will examine:

⚠️ overlap with trauma and other presentations
🔎 misdiagnosis and diagnostic overshadowing
A central principle throughout this lesson is:
Same behaviour does not necessarily mean the same mechanism.

What does research actually tell us about helping AuDHD adults?
You will explore:

You will learn why there is currently no single scientifically established “AuDHD treatment” — and how clinicians instead combine evidence for specific problems with individualized adaptations.
8. Research Gaps & The Future of AuDHD Science
The final lesson focuses on what science still does not know.
Topics include:

You will examine major gaps around:

Many AuDHD experiences are recognizable long before science has fully explained their mechanisms.
That does not make those experiences unimportant.
But it does mean we should distinguish between:
🗣️ “People repeatedly describe this experience.”
and:
🧠 “Science has established exactly why this happens.”
This course helps you make that distinction throughout.
For example:
It may be well supported that someone experiences both sensory seeking and sensory overload.
It is much less established that this happens because “the ADHD brain seeks stimulation while the autistic brain rejects it.”
The experience may be real.
The explanation still needs testing.
🧭 Build research literacy you can keep using
AuDHD science is developing rapidly.
New papers, new theories, and new claims will keep appearing.
Rather than asking you to memorize a fixed list of facts, this course also teaches you how to evaluate new evidence yourself.
You will learn to ask:

This means the course stays useful even as the research changes.

You do not need a scientific background.
Research concepts are explained in clear language while keeping the important nuance.
