Sensory Processing in Neurodivergent Adults: Sensitivity, Seeking & Overload

You may hear a sound nobody else seems bothered by, need strong pressure or movement to feel comfortable, miss hunger until it becomes urgent, or enjoy loud music while finding unpredictable background noise unbearable.

These experiences can involve sensory processing: how your brain and body notice, organise and respond to information from your senses. This article explains sensory sensitivity, low registration and sensory seeking, how sensory experiences can differ in autism, ADHD and AuDHD, why the same person can need both more and less stimulation, and what helps when sensory input becomes too much.

The key idea is: sensory processing is not simply about being “too sensitive.” Your nervous system can respond differently to different kinds of input in different situations.

🎧 What Is Sensory Processing?

Your senses constantly send information to your brain. Some of that information becomes important enough to notice consciously, while much of it remains in the background.

You are probably receiving far more sensory information right now than you are actively thinking about. There may be sounds outside, clothing touching your skin, light entering your eyes, pressure from the chair underneath you and signals coming from inside your body.

Your brain has to decide what matters.

👀 vision
👂 hearing
👃 smell
👅 taste
🖐️ touch
⚖️ balance and movement
🧍 body position and movement
🫀 signals from inside your body

Sensory processing involves much more than simply detecting these signals. Your brain also needs to work out how important they are, how much attention they deserve and how strongly you should respond.

For many neurodivergent adults, that filtering and prioritising can feel very different from what other people seem to experience.

🌈 We Have More Than Five Senses

Most of us grow up learning about five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.

Those matter, but they are not the whole sensory picture.

Two additional systems are particularly useful for understanding neurodivergent experience.

🧍 Proprioception helps your brain understand where your body is and how it is moving. It contributes to things such as judging force, coordinating movement and knowing where your limbs are without looking at them.

⚖️ The vestibular system processes movement and balance. It helps tell your brain whether you are moving, turning, accelerating or changing position.

There is also:

🫀 Interoception — processing signals from inside your body, such as hunger, thirst, bladder fullness, heartbeat, temperature, pain and fatigue.

This means something like “sensory differences” can refer to much more than disliking bright lights or loud noises.

🔊 Sensory Sensitivity: When Input Feels Like Too Much

Sensory sensitivity means certain input has a stronger impact on you than it appears to have on other people.

The refrigerator hum that everyone else ignores stays clearly audible.

A clothing label becomes impossible to stop feeling.

Someone wearing perfume across the room dominates your awareness.

Overhead lighting feels physically unpleasant rather than merely unattractive.

🔊 background conversations remain impossible to tune out
💡 bright or flickering lighting becomes exhausting
👕 seams, fabrics or labels continually demand attention
👃 smells become difficult to escape
🍽️ textures make certain foods intolerable
🖐️ unexpected touch can feel much stronger than expected

For autistic adults, sensory hyperreactivity is a well-established part of the autism picture, but sensory experience is extremely varied. Qualitative research with autistic adults shows that the same person can experience sensitivity, reduced awareness and sensory seeking across different senses and situations.

The important part is that the sensation is not necessarily experienced as a minor annoyance.

What one person experiences as:

“a slightly annoying noise”

another person may experience as something their attention cannot get away from.

🌫️ Low Registration: When Signals Arrive Late

Sensory differences can also move in the opposite direction.

Sometimes a signal needs to become quite strong before it reaches awareness. This is often described as low registration or hyporeactivity.

You might:

🫀 notice hunger only when you suddenly feel shaky
🚻 realise you need the bathroom only when it becomes urgent
🌡️ notice that you are cold much later than other people
🤕 discover a bruise without remembering when you hurt yourself
👂 fail to notice someone speaking when deeply focused
🧍 misjudge how much force you are using

This does not necessarily mean the sensory system is literally receiving no information. The issue can involve how strongly the signal enters awareness, how attention is allocated or how the information is interpreted.

That is especially important with internal body signals. Research on autistic interoception does not support the simple claim that autistic people universally have “poor interoception.” Some people report substantial difficulties, while findings vary depending on exactly what aspect of interoception is measured.

So the better question is:

Which signals do I notice easily, which do I notice late, and which are difficult to interpret?

⚡ Sensory Seeking: Sometimes You Need More Input

Not all neurodivergent sensory differences are about avoiding stimulation.

Sometimes your system actively seeks input.

You may feel better when moving, rocking, pressing against something, listening to loud music or repeatedly touching an interesting texture.

🚶 pacing while thinking
🌀 rocking
🖊️ fidgeting
🎵 repeating the same song
💪 seeking strong muscle or pressure input
🛏️ using a heavy blanket because the pressure feels good
🌶️ enjoying intense tastes
🎢 loving movement, speed or spinning

Sensory seeking can help with alertness, attention, regulation or simply pleasure.

This is one reason stimming should not automatically be treated as a symptom that needs stopping. Sometimes the behaviour is providing exactly the type of predictable sensory input the person needs.

And importantly:

sensory seeking and sensory sensitivity can exist in the same person.

🎵 “How Can You Hate Noise but Love Loud Music?”

This is one of the questions sensory-sensitive people are often asked.

“You say you’re sensitive to sound, but your music is really loud.”

That is not necessarily contradictory.

The difference may be control, predictability and meaning.

Your chosen music:

🎵 is predictable
🎛️ has a volume you control
❤️ may be emotionally rewarding
🎯 is the thing you want attention on
⏹️ can be stopped when you choose

The conversation happening behind you in a café:

🗣️ is unpredictable
🔄 constantly changes
🚫 cannot easily be controlled
🧠 competes with what you are trying to do
🎧 may need to be continually filtered

So two sounds at the same physical volume can create completely different experiences.

Chosen stimulation and imposed stimulation are not psychologically equivalent.

That helps explain why someone can seek intense sensory experiences in one setting and desperately need less stimulation in another.

♾️ Sensory Processing in Autism

Sensory differences are part of the recognised autism profile, but there is no single autistic sensory pattern.

One autistic person may be highly sensitive to sound but seek strong movement. Another may love busy visual environments but find light touch unbearable. Someone else may barely notice hunger while detecting tiny changes in background noise.

Research and autistic accounts consistently point toward a mixture of:

🔊 heightened responses to some input
🌫️ reduced awareness of other input
⚡ active sensory seeking
🔄 different responses depending on context
🌪️ greater difficulty when several forms of input arrive together

This variety matters.

Saying:

“Autistic people are hypersensitive.”

captures only part of the picture.

A more accurate description is:

autistic sensory processing can differ across intensity, awareness, seeking, filtering and response — and the pattern is individual.

⚡ Sensory Processing in ADHD

Sensory processing is less central to the formal description of ADHD, so sensory experiences can easily be overlooked.

But many ADHD adults recognise them.

You might need background music to work, become disproportionately irritated by repetitive sounds, constantly fidget, seek movement or find it difficult to tune out conversations happening around you.

Recent evidence supports this broader picture. A large systematic review and meta-analysis covering more than 5,000 participants found greater sensory sensitivity, avoidance, seeking and low registration in ADHD groups compared with people without ADHD.

That does not mean sensory differences are required for ADHD or that every person with ADHD has them.

But it does mean experiences such as these deserve to be taken seriously:

🎧 “I hear every conversation around me.”
🖊️ “I need to move or fidget to concentrate.”
🔊 “That repetitive sound makes it impossible to think.”
⚡ “I need stimulation or my brain disappears.”
🌫️ “I do not notice physical needs when I am focused.”

ADHD sensory experiences can also interact strongly with attention regulation. Sometimes a sensory signal becomes difficult not because it is physically painful, but because attention keeps being captured by it.

🔄 Sensory Processing in AuDHD

There is no single established AuDHD sensory profile.

But living with both autism and ADHD can create sensory needs that seem contradictory.

You may need stimulation to stay engaged but become overwhelmed when that stimulation is unpredictable. You may want music while working but be unable to tolerate someone talking nearby. You may seek movement while needing a visually calm environment.

“I need stimulation.”
+
🎧 “There is too much stimulation.”

🎵 “Music helps me concentrate.”
+
🗣️ “Background speech makes thinking impossible.”

🚶 “Movement regulates me.”
+
👥 “Crowded movement around me overwhelms me.”

These are not necessarily inconsistencies.

Different sensory systems can have different needs, and controllable input can feel completely different from uncontrollable input.

The goal is not always to find the lowest possible amount of stimulation.

It is to find a sensory environment that provides the right kind of input without too much unwanted competition.

🫀 Interoception: Sensory Processing Inside the Body

Sensory processing also happens internally.

Interoception includes signals related to hunger, thirst, heartbeat, temperature, pain, bladder fullness and fatigue. These signals contribute to knowing what your body needs and sometimes to recognising emotional states.

You may experience:

🍽️ hunger arriving suddenly rather than gradually
💧 forgetting to drink because thirst barely enters awareness
🚻 noticing bladder signals very late
😰 knowing something feels wrong without knowing whether it is anxiety, hunger or exhaustion
🪫 realising you are tired only once functioning suddenly collapses
❤️ noticing a racing heart before recognising the associated emotion

Autistic interoception research is still more complicated than popular explanations sometimes suggest. Some autistic people clearly report substantial interoceptive difficulty, while other measures show smaller or inconsistent differences.

So rather than assuming “autism means poor interoception,” it is more useful to map your own pattern.

🧍 Proprioception: Where Is My Body?

Proprioception helps you sense where your body is, how it is moving and how much force you are using without constantly having to look.

It contributes to actions as ordinary as walking downstairs, lifting a cup and typing on a keyboard.

Differences in body-position processing or a strong preference for proprioceptive input can show up in everyday ways:

💪 enjoying firm pressure
🧱 pushing against walls or furniture
🛏️ wanting weight or compression
🚶 finding walking regulating
🤝 using more or less force than intended
🧍 feeling more organised after physical activity

Many people describe strong muscle and joint input as grounding or organising. That does not mean proprioceptive activities are a universal treatment for neurodivergence, but they can be useful sensory tools for some people.

⚖️ The Vestibular System: Movement and Balance

The vestibular system is involved in balance, acceleration and movement.

Some people actively seek vestibular stimulation.

🎢 fast rides
🌀 spinning
🪑 rocking
🚴 cycling
🏃 running

Others become uncomfortable with movement very quickly.

🚗 motion sickness
🛗 discomfort in lifts
🌀 dizziness after turning
🚆 difficulty with moving visual environments
🪜 unease with height or unstable surfaces

And again, the same person may enjoy one kind of movement and dislike another.

A predictable rocking chair is not the same sensory experience as a crowded bus suddenly braking.

🔄 Your Sensory Profile Is Not Fixed Every Day

One of the most confusing things about sensory sensitivity is that the same input can be manageable one day and unbearable the next.

Yesterday the supermarket was fine.

Today the lights, carts, music and people feel impossible.

That does not mean yesterday’s sensitivity was fake or today’s reaction is exaggerated. Your tolerance for sensory input depends partly on what the rest of your system is already carrying.

😴 poor sleep
😰 stress
🧠 high cognitive demand
👥 prolonged social interaction
🎭 masking
🤕 pain or illness
🌪️ previous sensory exposure
🪫 burnout

Imagine sensory tolerance as having some amount of margin. When there is plenty of margin, the sound of someone chewing may be irritating but manageable. When almost nothing is left, the same sound can become the final input your brain can tolerate.

🌪️ Sensory Difference Is Not the Same as Sensory Overload

This distinction matters.

A sensory difference is part of your usual pattern.

You may consistently notice sounds strongly, dislike certain fabrics or seek movement.

Sensory overload is a state in which incoming sensory demand has become more than you can effectively manage.

During overload, sensory input can begin affecting much more than comfort.

🎧 sounds become increasingly intrusive
💬 conversation becomes harder
🧠 thinking becomes less organised
😰 irritability or panic rises
🔄 flexibility drops
🚪 escaping the environment becomes urgent
🧊 shutdown or 🔥 meltdown may become more likely

So:

sensory sensitivity is a pattern.

sensory overload is a state.

Someone can have sensory differences without currently being overloaded, and people without autism or ADHD can also experience sensory overload under sufficiently intense conditions.

📈 Sensory Load Can Build Rather Than Reset

Not every sensory experience disappears as soon as you leave the room.

After a noisy commute, busy workday and crowded supermarket, you may arrive home much less tolerant of input than you were that morning. A television that would normally be fine suddenly feels too loud. Conversation becomes harder. The house lights seem brighter.

This cumulative experience is useful to think about even though it is difficult to measure precisely.

Your existing concept of Sensory Debt describes it as a practical metaphor: repeated sensory demand can accumulate when adequate recovery does not happen between exposures.

🚆 commute
+
🏢 noisy workplace
+
👥 social interaction
+
🛒 supermarket

🪫 very little sensory margin left at home

“Sensory debt” is not a medical diagnosis or formal scientific construct.

But the metaphor can help explain why the last trigger is not always the main cause.

🧠 Sensory Load Can Become Cognitive Load

Suppose you are trying to answer an email while someone talks nearby.

Part of your brain is trying to write.

Another part keeps processing the speech.

If the conversation refuses to fade into the background, concentration requires more active effort.

The email has not become harder.

The environment has increased the processing surrounding it.

🎧 filter background information
🎯 keep attention on the task
📦 preserve what you were thinking
🔔 recover whenever attention shifts
📝 continue writing

This is one reason sensory environments can have such a large effect on executive functioning.

🎭 Masking Can Hide Sensory Difficulty

Sensory distress is not always visible.

Someone may sit through a restaurant dinner while the music, smells, lighting and conversation become increasingly difficult. They smile, respond appropriately and never mention that anything is wrong.

Then they arrive home and need silence for hours.

From the outside:

“You seemed completely fine.”

Internally:

🎧 every sound required filtering
💡 the lighting stayed intrusive
💬 conversation required increasing effort
🎭 discomfort was continually hidden
🪫 capacity kept falling

Being able to tolerate an environment temporarily does not prove the environment is easy to tolerate.

This is where sensory processing and neurodivergent masking often meet.

🛠️ What Actually Helps Sensory Processing?

There is no universal sensory toolkit because sensory profiles differ.

A strategy that regulates one person may irritate another.

The best starting point is therefore not:

“What should autistic or ADHD people use?”

It is:

“What happens in my sensory system?”

🎧 If There Is Too Much Input

Reduce or control what you can.

🎧 headphones or earplugs
💡 softer or indirect lighting
🚪 quieter spaces
👕 comfortable clothing
📵 fewer competing notifications
🛒 shopping at quieter times

⚡ If You Need More Input

Add stimulation deliberately.

🚶 movement
🎵 music
🖊️ fidgeting
💪 resistance or pressure
🌀 rocking
👐 preferred textures

🎛️ Increase Control and Predictability

Sometimes the amount of stimulation is less important than whether you control it.

🎵 your music rather than someone else’s
🪑 choosing where you sit
💡 controlling lighting
🚪 knowing where you can take a break
📅 knowing what sensory environment to expect

🧠 Protect Difficult Tasks

Do not combine high sensory demand with high cognitive demand unless necessary.

If you need to think deeply:

🎧 reduce background speech
🔕 remove notifications
🚪 use the quietest available space
⏸️ recover before the next demanding activity

📋 Learn Your Own Pattern

A sensory profile can be much more useful than a generic list.

Ask:

🔊 Which sounds affect me?
💡 Which visual environments exhaust me?
👕 Which textures distract or hurt?
⚡ Which input helps me regulate?
🫀 Which body signals do I notice late?
🌪️ What are my early overload signs?
🪫 What changes when I am already tired?

🌱 The Goal Is Not Maximum Tolerance

Sensory support is sometimes framed as training yourself to tolerate as much stimulation as possible.

That should not automatically be the goal.

Sometimes tolerance can increase through familiarity, support or gradual adaptation. But repeatedly forcing yourself through unnecessary sensory distress is not inherently therapeutic.

A better question is:

What sensory input is necessary for the life I want, and what input is simply creating unnecessary friction?

You probably cannot eliminate every difficult noise, smell, crowd or texture.

But you may be able to change:

🎧 how much exposure you get
🎛️ how much control you have
⏸️ when you recover
🏠 how your own environment is organised
🛠️ what tools you use
📅 when demanding activities happen

Sensory support is not about building a completely silent, predictable world.

It is about creating enough fit, control and recovery that ordinary sensory input does not repeatedly consume the resources you need for everything else.

⚠️ Sudden Sensory Changes Deserve Attention

A longstanding sensory profile is different from a sudden change.

If sounds, light, movement, smell, pain or other sensations suddenly become dramatically different from your normal experience, it is worth considering causes beyond neurodivergence.

Changes can sometimes be associated with:

🤕 migraine
👂 hearing problems or tinnitus
👁️ vision changes
💊 medication effects
😴 severe sleep disruption
🩺 illness
🧠 neurological conditions
😰 periods of intense stress or anxiety

Autism or ADHD should not automatically become the explanation for every sensory experience.

Especially when something is new, severe or rapidly changing, appropriate medical assessment can be important.

🌱 A Better Question Than “Am I Too Sensitive?”

Many neurodivergent adults grow up hearing that they are:

too sensitive.

Too sensitive to noise.

Too sensitive to clothing.

Too sensitive to smells.

Too sensitive to busy places.

That description turns a sensory experience into a personality judgment.

A more useful set of questions is:

🎧 What exactly am I noticing?
📈 How intense does it feel?
🎯 Can my attention move away from it?
⚡ Do I need less input or different input?
🎛️ Does having control change the experience?
🔋 Does my tolerance change when I am tired?
🌪️ What happens just before overload?
🛠️ What makes this environment easier?

Sensory processing is not a competition to prove who can tolerate the most.

It is part of how your brain and body interact with the world.

And once you understand your own pattern, the question can shift from:

“Why does this bother me so much?”

to:

“What does my sensory system need in this situation?”

That question is usually much more useful.
