You open a browser tab and forget why. Someone gives you three instructions and only the first one survives. You wait for your turn to speak and lose the point you wanted to make.

These experiences can involve working memory: the mental space that keeps information available while you are actively using it. This article explains how working memory differs from other types of memory, how it can show up in ADHD, autism and AuDHD, why stress and interruptions make it harder, and what actually helps in everyday life.

The key idea is simple: you can have an excellent memory and still have unreliable working memory.

🧠 What Is Working Memory?

Working memory is the temporary mental workspace you use when information needs to stay available while you do something with it.

Imagine someone says:

“Go upstairs, get my charger, close the bedroom window and bring the laundry basket down.”

You understand every part of the request. But while walking upstairs, you need to keep the remaining steps active. If something distracts you along the way, part of the sequence may disappear.

Working memory is also involved when you:

🧮 calculate something in your head
📖 follow a long sentence
🗣️ listen while preparing your response
🧭 keep track of where you are in a task
⚖️ compare several choices
📝 remember what you were about to write

This is different from simply storing memories. Working memory is what keeps information available right now.

💾 Working Memory Is Not Your Memory in General

One of the most confusing things about working-memory difficulties is how selective they can seem.

You may remember an obscure fact from ten years ago but forget why you walked into the kitchen thirty seconds ago. You might remember exact details from a childhood conversation while repeatedly forgetting where you put something five minutes earlier.

That is not necessarily contradictory.

Long-term memory stores information over much longer periods. Working memory keeps a much smaller amount of information temporarily active.

So when someone says:

“But your memory is amazing.”

they may be talking about a completely different kind of memory.

Working memory is also different from remembering to do something in the future.

You may think at 10:00:

“I need to call the dentist this afternoon.”

Then 15:00 arrives and the intention never comes back into awareness.

That is closer to prospective memory: remembering to carry out an intention later.

📞 remembering to make a call
💊 taking medication at the right time
🛒 buying something when you reach the shop
📅 cancelling a subscription before renewal
📨 sending a message after work

Working memory can still play a part, but these failures are not exactly the same as losing information you were actively using moments ago.

The practical lesson is similar, though: important intentions are safer when they exist somewhere outside your head.

🎯 Attention and Working Memory Are Closely Connected

Working memory does not operate in isolation. Attention helps decide which information stays active.

Imagine reading a recipe.

You read:

“Add the garlic, paprika and tomatoes.”

Then your phone lights up.

Your attention moves.

A few seconds later you return to the pan and think:

“What was I adding?”

The memory did not necessarily disappear because your brain cannot store three ingredients. The interruption changed what your attention was maintaining.

This is especially relevant in ADHD, where attention can move quickly toward new or more stimulating information.

Working-memory differences are common in ADHD, although they do not look identical in everyone. For some adults, the problem is most obvious when several things need to stay active at once. For others, interruptions and shifting attention are what repeatedly knock information out of the mental workspace.

This can create a day full of tiny disappearances.

These moments can look careless from the outside. But the problem may not be that the information was unimportant or that the person was not trying.

Autistic working-memory experiences are more varied than the stereotype of “good memory” or “bad memory” suggests.

Some autistic adults remember enormous amounts of detailed information, especially when it is meaningful, organised or connected to an interest. At the same time, working memory may become much less reliable when information arrives quickly, several demands compete, or the environment is sensory-heavy.

For example, someone may:

💬 struggle with several spoken instructions at once

The question is not:

“Does this autistic person have a good memory?”

It is:

“What kind of information remains accessible under which conditions?”

🔄 Working Memory in AuDHD

AuDHD can make working-memory access particularly uneven because attention, switching, sensory processing and structure all interact.

You may hold a complicated system in your head with surprising ease when deeply engaged, then lose a simple instruction after one interruption. A highly structured task can feel easy, while a vague task with several moving parts becomes almost impossible to keep mentally organised.

There is no single AuDHD working-memory profile. But the combination can make one thing especially obvious:

Conversation is one of the easiest places to notice working-memory strain.

You are listening to someone while also forming a thought you want to contribute. You need to keep listening so you do not miss what they say, but you also need to keep your own thought available until it is your turn.

Then they make another point.

Your thought disappears.

That is a lot happening at once.

For some ADHD adults, this can create a painful choice:

interrupt now and risk seeming rude

or:

wait politely and lose the thought.

This is one reason important conversations may be easier when there is more time, less interruption or the option to write.

📋 Why Multistep Instructions Can Vanish

Someone says:

“Open the spreadsheet, copy last month’s numbers into the new file, check the total and send it to me.”

You understand every word.

But by the time you open the spreadsheet, the rest of the instruction has become fuzzy.

That does not mean the instruction was too intellectually difficult. It may simply have contained more steps than were easy to keep active while starting the task.

Multistep instructions require you to:

🎯 remember the overall goal
🔄 update what remains after each step
✅ keep the final action available

This is why written instructions can make such a large difference.

Instead of asking working memory to preserve the entire sequence, the information remains visible.

The task stays the same.

The memory demand changes.

🔔 Interruptions Can Erase the Mental Map

One of the most frustrating working-memory experiences happens when someone interrupts you in the middle of something complex.

You were writing, planning or solving a problem. You knew exactly where everything was going.

Someone asks a quick question.

You answer.

Then you turn back and find that the structure is gone.

The document is still in front of you. The skill is still there. But the mental map that made the next step obvious has disappeared.

Decision-making can become exhausting because several options need to remain mentally available at the same time.

Imagine comparing three insurance policies, laptops or travel options. Each one has several advantages and disadvantages.

As more variables accumulate, it becomes harder to keep the comparison stable.

You may read option A, move to B and then realise you can no longer remember exactly why A seemed better.

This is not necessarily indecisiveness in the personality sense.

Sometimes the comparison itself has exceeded what is comfortable to keep active.

Reducing the number of options, writing down the differences or comparing one dimension at a time can dramatically change the task.

🎧 Sensory Input Can Compete With Working Memory

Working memory is much easier to use when the environment is not constantly pulling attention elsewhere.

Imagine trying to remember three spoken instructions in a quiet room.

Now do it while:

🔊 several people are talking
🚶 movement keeps catching your eye
💡 lighting is uncomfortable
📱 notifications appear
👕 something on your body feels irritating

The instructions have not changed.

But your brain has more competing information to manage.

This is why someone may remember verbal information perfectly at home and repeatedly lose it in a busy workplace.

It is not necessarily inconsistency in effort.

The processing environment changed.

😰 Stress Can Fill the Mental Workspace

Working memory can also become less reliable when your mind is already occupied by emotionally important information.

Imagine trying to follow instructions immediately after an argument.

Part of your brain is listening.

Another part is running:

😰 What did they mean?
❤️ Are they still upset?
💬 Should I say something?
🔄 Why did I react that way?
🔮 What happens next?

The instruction is now competing with an active emotional process.

That is why memory can feel dramatically worse during anxiety, conflict, overload or periods of high stress.

Your memory system did not necessarily suddenly deteriorate.

More things are competing for access to it.

🔋 Working Memory Changes With Capacity

Working memory is not equally reliable every hour of every day.

After good sleep in a quiet environment, you may keep several things active with relatively little effort. After a demanding day, the same instruction may disappear almost instantly.

Factors that can make working memory harder include:

🪫 fatigue
🎧 prolonged sensory demand
🔄 repeated switching
😰 emotional stress
🧠 sustained cognitive effort
🤕 pain or illness
🔥 burnout

On Monday you remember everything.

On Wednesday you cannot keep three steps active.

The useful question is not:

“If you could do it Monday, why can’t you do it now?”

It is:

“What else is your brain already carrying today?”

💼 Working Memory at Work

Modern workplaces place enormous hidden demands on working memory.

You may be expected to remember who asked for what, which deadline changed, where several projects stand, what was decided in a meeting and which message still needs a response.

Then every few minutes, another notification arrives.

This creates an environment where forgetting is almost built into the workflow.

Useful supports include:

📝 written instructions
📋 visible project boards
🎯 explicit priorities
📅 calendars and reminders
🔕 uninterrupted focus periods
📌 restart notes
✅ recurring checklists
👥 short structured check-ins

These are not signs that someone is incapable of doing the job.

They allow information to exist where it can be reliably retrieved instead of asking working memory to carry the entire organisation.

❤️ Working Memory in Relationships

Memory problems can become emotionally painful because they are easily interpreted as lack of care.

“If it mattered, you would remember.”

But caring and remembering are not the same mental process.

Someone may genuinely care about an agreement and still fail to retrieve it at the right moment. They may listen carefully to a request but lose part of it before acting. They may absolutely intend to do something later but never encounter the cue that brings the intention back.

That does not mean responsibility disappears.

It means the solution should target the actual problem.

The most useful principle is:

Do not keep something in working memory when it does not need to live there.

The goal is not to remember to remember.

The goal is to make the information available when you need it.

The task becomes something you can return to rather than a sequence you need to mentally preserve.

🔕 Reduce Interruptions

If the task depends heavily on holding a mental structure, protect that structure.

📝 leave a short note before switching tasks
📍 mark exactly where to restart

🎯 Make the Current Priority Obvious

When several unfinished tasks compete for attention, working memory keeps trying to maintain all of them.

A visible:

RIGHT NOW: finish the application

can reduce that competition.

💬 Put Verbal Information in Writing

Speech disappears.

Writing remains.

If something matters, make it retrievable.

🤖 Technology Can Be External Working Memory

Digital tools are especially useful when they take over storage and organisation that would otherwise need to happen internally.

Using external tools does not mean your brain is becoming lazy.

Humans have always externalised memory.

Writing itself is a memory technology.

The goal is to use working memory for thinking with information, not for carrying every appointment, task and intention in your life.

🧠 Can You Train Working Memory?

Working-memory training sounds appealing: practise memory tasks and your working memory becomes stronger everywhere.

The reality is less dramatic.

People can improve at tasks they practise, but those improvements do not always transfer broadly into everyday functioning. Becoming better at a memory game does not automatically mean you will stop losing your train of thought in conversations or suddenly become organised at work.

That does not make training useless.

It simply means there is another important route:

make daily life less dependent on unsupported working memory.

You do not need to increase the size of the mental desk before you are allowed to organise what sits on it.

⚠️ Not Every Memory Problem Is ADHD or Autism

Working-memory difficulties are common in neurodivergent adults, but new or significant memory changes should not automatically be attributed to neurodivergence.

Memory can also be affected by:

😴 severe sleep loss
🌧️ depression
😰 anxiety
🪫 burnout
💊 medication or substance effects
🤕 pain
🩺 physical illness
🧠 neurological conditions

A lifelong pattern of losing temporary information is very different from a sudden decline.

Seek appropriate medical assessment when memory problems are new, rapidly worsening or accompanied by symptoms such as significant confusion, language changes, disorientation, weakness or other neurological changes.

🌱 Stop Making Your Brain Carry Everything

Working-memory difficulties often generate shame because the failures seem so small.

You forgot why you opened the cupboard.

Lost your sentence.

Forgot one item.

Needed the instruction again.

But instead of asking:

“Why can’t I remember something so simple?”

ask:

🧠 How much was I already holding?
🔔 Was I interrupted?
🎧 Was competing input pulling attention away?
🔄 Did I switch contexts?
😰 Was stress occupying part of my attention?
🪫 Was I already depleted?
📝 Could this information have existed outside my head?

Sometimes the best working-memory strategy is not trying harder to remember.

It is designing life so remembering everything internally is no longer the price of functioning.

Write it down. Make it visible. Protect the task context. Let the environment remember some of it for you.
