Cognitive Load in Neurodivergent Adults
Sometimes your brain feels full even when the task in front of you looks small. You may manage complex work for hours but get stuck answering emails, making an appointment or deciding what to cook.
This can involve cognitive load: how much information, remembering, deciding, switching and processing your brain is managing at once. This article explains why cognitive load can become especially noticeable in ADHD, autism and AuDHD, why simple tasks can sometimes feel so difficult, and how reducing unnecessary mental work can make everyday functioning easier.

The key idea is simple: the task is often only part of the load.
🧠 What Does Cognitive Load Mean?
Your brain cannot consciously hold and manipulate unlimited amounts of new information at once. At any moment, you are selecting what matters, keeping some information active, ignoring other information, making decisions and updating what you are doing as circumstances change.
When only a few things need active processing, this can feel effortless. When many things compete at once, the same brain can begin to feel crowded.

None of these necessarily creates a problem by itself. The difficulty often appears when several of them stack.
That is cognitive load.
📦 Your Mental Workspace Has Limits
A useful way to imagine working memory is as a desk. With one document on it, there is plenty of room. Add several notes, your phone, an unfinished calculation and someone asking you a question, and the workspace becomes crowded.
Working memory does something similar. It keeps information temporarily available while you use it. When too many things need to remain active, some become harder to access.

⚖️ Cognitive Load Is Not Intelligence
High cognitive load can easily be mistaken for lack of ability. Someone understands a task perfectly but cannot get started. They perform brilliantly on one project and then struggle with something that looks much easier.
Imagine completing an online application. The questions themselves may be simple, but you also need to find documents, remember passwords, interpret unclear wording, move between websites and keep track of what remains unfinished.
The visible task is complete the application. The actual mental task may include:

❓ interpreting unclear questions
🔄 moving between systems
📦 remembering what is still missing
⚖️ making decisions
🎯 maintaining the overall goal
Someone can understand every individual part and still become overloaded by the combination.
Knowing how to do something is not the same as being able to hold everything required to do it at once.
🧩 The Work Around the Work
Some tasks are genuinely difficult. Learning something new, solving a complicated problem or making an important decision naturally requires mental effort.
But everyday tasks often contain another layer: work that exists around the actual work.
Imagine you need to write a short report. The writing itself is manageable, but the instructions are vague, information is spread across several emails, you keep getting interrupted and nobody has made the deadline clear.

The report did not become intellectually more difficult.
The environment made it cognitively more expensive.
This is why reducing cognitive load often means removing unnecessary work around the work, not making the actual task easier.
⚡ Cognitive Load in ADHD
ADHD can make cognitive load especially noticeable because attention, working memory and switching may already require active management. A task can go well while everything remains mentally connected, then become much harder after repeated interruptions.
You start writing with a clear idea. A message arrives. You answer it, remember another task, open another tab and eventually return. The document is still there, but the mental structure you were using has disappeared.

One interruption may barely matter. Twenty interruptions can make the entire day exhausting.

♾️ Cognitive Load in Autism
Autistic cognitive load can rise sharply when a situation becomes unpredictable, sensory-heavy or requires several kinds of processing at once.
A familiar journey may normally require very little thought. Then the train is cancelled. Suddenly you need to abandon the expected plan, find another route, calculate timing, navigate a crowded station and make several quick decisions.

Your ability to travel did not disappear.
The number of things requiring active processing increased.
This is one reason predictability and clear information can make such a large difference. They reduce the amount that must be reconstructed in real time.
🔄 Cognitive Load in AuDHD
AuDHD can create an especially uneven load pattern. A complicated subject you care deeply about may feel easy because attention locks onto it and the information forms one coherent system. A short administrative task can feel much harder because it contains several unrelated demands.
A two-minute email might require you to:

⚖️ decide what information to include
✍️ choose the wording
🎭 consider how it will be perceived
📅 remember what needs to happen afterward
🔄 switch away from what you were already doing
This is why task size and cognitive load are not the same thing.
A large task can have relatively low cognitive load when it is structured and coherent. A tiny task can create high load when it contains switching, ambiguity and social interpretation.

🎧 Sensory Load Can Add to Cognitive Load
Sensory processing and cognitive load are not the same thing, but they interact constantly.
Think about having a conversation in a quiet room. Now have the same conversation in a crowded café with music, plates clattering, people moving nearby and strong smells coming from the kitchen.
The words have not changed.
Your brain simply has much more to deal with at the same time.

For some neurodivergent people, sensory information does not easily disappear into the background. More of it remains active, which can leave less room for the thing they are actually trying to do.

💬 Conversations Can Carry a Lot of Hidden Load
Conversation looks simple because we do it every day. But while someone speaks, you may be listening, remembering earlier context, interpreting tone, deciding what they mean and preparing your own response at the same time.

Add background noise, emotional tension or unfamiliar people and the load can rise quickly.
This also helps explain why some neurodivergent adults find writing easier. Written information stays available, processing can happen at your own pace and fewer things need to happen simultaneously.
🎭 Masking Adds Another Layer
Now imagine having that same conversation while also monitoring yourself.
Am I making enough eye contact? Am I talking too much? Does my face look interested? Was that too direct? Should I stop moving my hands?
The conversation already requires processing. Masking adds another task on top.

This is why someone can appear socially capable and still feel completely exhausted afterward.
The visible performance may look effortless.

🔔 Interruptions Cost More Than Their Duration
Five one-minute interruptions do not necessarily cost only five minutes.
Every interruption can pull you out of the mental context you were using. When you return, you may need to rebuild it before productive work can continue.

That moment of staring at the screen and thinking “Where was I?” is part of the cost.
This is why protected focus time can be such an effective neurodivergent accommodation.
📋 Why “Simple” Tasks Can Feel So Difficult
Some of the most frustrating neurodivergent difficulties involve things other people describe as small.
Answer the email.
Make the appointment.
Put the laundry away.
Decide what to eat.
The label hides all the individual processes inside it.
Make an appointment might mean:
📞 choose how to contact them
📅 find your calendar
⚖️ decide which times work
💬 explain what you need
⏳ wait for a response
📦 remember the instructions afterward
🔄 return to whatever you were doing before
When capacity is high, these steps blend together.
When capacity is low, every step becomes visible.
That is why “it’s only one small thing” can be so misleading.
😰 Stress and Emotions Also Use Attention
Imagine trying to work after receiving an upsetting message. Part of your attention stays on the task, but another part keeps returning to what happened.

The work itself has not become more complicated. But it is now competing with information your brain considers important.
This is why cognitive functioning can change dramatically during stress or emotional conflict. Your intelligence has not changed. Your brain simply has more to manage.
🔋 Why Cognitive Load Changes From Day to Day
The same task can feel easy one day and almost impossible the next because the task is only one side of the equation.
Your current state matters too.

A small extra demand feels very different when there is plenty of capacity left than when almost everything is already being used.

Cognitive load is only one form of demand.

This distinction matters because solving one type of load may not solve the whole problem.
You can move to a quiet room and still be overwhelmed by fifteen decisions.
Or simplify the decisions and still be unable to function because the sensory environment is unbearable.
🪫 Cognitive Load Is Not Burnout
A mentally demanding afternoon can leave you exhausted.
That does not automatically mean burnout.
Cognitive load describes what a situation is asking your brain to process. Burnout is broader and longer lasting, involving a more substantial reduction in energy, functioning or tolerance over time.

🌪️ cognitive overload → this is currently more than I can process effectively
🪫 fatigue → I am depleted
🔥 burnout → my baseline capacity has changed over a longer period
Repeatedly operating beyond sustainable capacity may contribute to burnout, but cognitive load and burnout are not interchangeable.
🛠️ Reduce the Work Around the Work
The most useful question is not always:
How do I become better at handling more?
Sometimes it is:
What can I stop asking my brain to manage?

Use the environment as storage.
📅 calendar
✅ checklist
📝 notes
📌 visible reminders
📋 written instructions
🎙️ quick voice notes
Your brain can then spend more effort processing the task rather than remembering everything surrounding it.
🎯 Reduce Ambiguity
Unclear communication creates extra interpretation.
Instead of:
“Can you deal with this soon?”
try:
“Please review sections 2 and 3 and send the changes by Thursday afternoon.”
More words can create less cognitive load when they remove uncertainty.

Do not keep an entire project mentally active.
Instead of:

write:

The project becomes a sequence instead of one giant mental object.
🌱 A Better Question Than “Why Is This So Hard?”
When a small task becomes difficult, it is easy to turn the difficulty into self-judgment.
Why can’t I just do this?
Why can I handle complicated things but not this?
A more useful question is:
How many things is this task actually requiring my brain to manage at once?
🧠 What needs to stay in working memory?
🔄 How much switching is involved?
❓ What is unclear?
🎧 What sensory input is competing?
💬 How much social interpretation is required?
🎭 Am I also monitoring myself?
😰 Is worry already using attention?
📝 What could exist outside my head instead?
Sometimes the problem is not the task itself.
It is everything wrapped around it.
And when that unnecessary load is reduced, the ability that seemed inaccessible can suddenly become much easier to use.
