Some people answer almost immediately.

Others need a few seconds.

They may understand the question perfectly, know exactly what they think and still need more time before the answer is ready.

That difference is often described as processing speed.

But processing speed is one of those terms that becomes much less precise once it moves from neuropsychology into everyday conversation.

Scientifically, processing speed usually refers to how efficiently someone performs relatively simple cognitive operations under time pressure. Standardised tests often measure how quickly and accurately a person can scan, discriminate, match or reproduce simple visual information. That is not the same thing as intelligence, depth of thought, language comprehension, auditory processing, working memory or how quickly someone can generate a complex answer.

That distinction is especially important in autism and ADHD research. A 2023 meta-analysis of modern Wechsler intelligence tests found a striking average pattern in autism: verbal and nonverbal reasoning were broadly age-typical, while processing-speed scores were substantially lower. ADHD showed a different profile: processing speed was generally age-typical at group level, with somewhat greater weakness in working memory.

So the science does not support the simple claim:

“Neurodivergent brains process information slowly.”

A better conclusion is:

Some neurodivergent people show slower performance on particular processing-speed tasks, while others mainly experience variability, working-memory bottlenecks, sensory competition, response delays or difficulty processing information quickly under complex real-world conditions.

The second person did not necessarily understand less.

A single label such as “slow processor” can hide more than it explains.

📦 Processing Speed Versus Working Memory

Processing speed and working memory interact closely.

But they are different.

Working memory is the temporary workspace used to keep information active while doing something with it.

Imagine someone says:

“Go upstairs, get the charger from my desk, bring down the blue folder and check whether the bedroom window is open.”

You need to:

A person may understand every word immediately but lose part of the instruction before finishing it.

That is primarily a working-memory problem, not necessarily slow processing.

Conversely, someone may remember all four instructions but need longer to interpret and act on them.

Research in ADHD demonstrates how intertwined these systems can become. Experimental work has found that slower information-processing processes can contribute to apparent working-memory difficulties, while other studies show that working-memory impairment itself can affect response speed.

People also commonly use processing delay to describe needing additional time after hearing speech.

That does not automatically mean psychometric processing speed is low.

Listening to spoken language requires several processes.

Another distinction:

taking longer to answer does not prove that the underlying information was processed slowly.

A response can be delayed because someone is:

That does not mean all autistic people “think slowly.”

Of autism and ADHD, the strongest current evidence for a group-level processing-speed difference appears in autism.

A 2023 meta-analysis combining modern Wechsler cognitive assessments found that autistic participants, across children and adults, showed a clear relative processing-speed weakness while verbal and nonverbal reasoning remained broadly typical. Processing speed was roughly one standard deviation below the normative mean in the pooled autistic sample.

Earlier adult studies point in the same direction.

Haigh and colleagues tested autistic and non-autistic adults using several different processing-speed measures and found slower average performance in the autistic group across all three tasks. Slower performance was also associated with greater social-communication difficulty within the autistic sample.

That does not establish that processing speed causes autistic communication differences.

The study was correlational.

But it raises an important possibility:

real-time social communication may sometimes demand information faster than a person can comfortably integrate it.

not every autistic person has slow processing speed.

Other experimental literatures do find slower average reaction times on some ADHD tasks.

But reaction-time research reveals something more distinctive:

variability may matter more than simple slowness.

A major meta-analysis of 319 studies found increased reaction-time variability in ADHD but reported that the apparent slowing in average response time disappeared after variability was taken into account.

This produces a different picture.

Person B is not uniformly slow.

They are inconsistent.

The average may end up slower, but the underlying phenomenon is different.

That distinction has been central to ADHD reaction-time research for years. Increased intra-individual response variability is one of the more replicated neuropsychological findings associated with ADHD, although it is not unique to ADHD and cannot diagnose the condition on its own.

This can help make sense of everyday experiences such as:

Research specifically examining processing speed in adults with both autism and ADHD is still limited.

So there is currently no well-established AuDHD processing-speed profile.

What we can do is combine the separate literatures cautiously.

Autism research suggests a group-level relative weakness on several traditional processing-speed measures.

ADHD research suggests greater response variability, working-memory difficulty and context-sensitive cognitive control rather than universally slow processing.

When both occur together, a person might therefore experience:

Consider answering a question in a quiet room.

Now answer it while:

🚶 people move through your peripheral vision
📱 your phone vibrates
👃 a strong smell is distracting you

The question did not become intellectually harder.

But the processing environment changed.

Your nervous system now has to handle more information simultaneously.

This does not mean sensory load literally lowers one stable brain-speed variable.

It means more competing processing demands can increase the time and effort required to complete the task.

That is why the difference between sensory processing, cognitive load and processing speed matters.

Speech usually disappears as soon as it is spoken.

Writing stays visible.

That means a person can:

This is why written communication can sometimes remain easier during periods of neurodivergent burnout or overload. An employee may produce excellent work when allowed:

Processing differences become emotionally charged when delay is mistaken for intention.

One person asks:

“Are you upset with me?”

The other person does not answer immediately.

That silence can be interpreted as:

The person is not refusing to communicate.

They may be creating the conditions under which they can communicate accurately.

This is especially relevant when processing demands combine with alexithymia, overload or autistic shutdown.

There is no universal intervention for processing speed because the first question should be:

What is actually creating the delay?

If the issue is genuine psychometric processing speed, one set of supports may help.

If the real problem is working memory, sensory distraction, anxiety or task switching, a different support may be needed.

A person may appear less capable when required to:
