Prospective Memory in ADHD, Autism & AuDHD: Why You Forget What You Meant to Do

You remember that you need to call someone — until the moment you actually have time to call. You put something by the door so you will take it with you, then walk straight past it. You fully intend to send a message after work, but the intention seems to disappear until hours later.

This can involve prospective memory: remembering to carry out an intention in the future. This article explains how prospective memory differs from working memory and ordinary forgetting, how it can interact with ADHD, autism and AuDHD, why reminders sometimes fail, and how to make future intentions easier to retrieve at the moment they matter.

The key idea is: the intention can be completely genuine and still fail to reappear at the right moment.

🧠 What Is Prospective Memory?

Most memory questions are about the past.

What did someone say yesterday? Where did you park? What was the name of that restaurant?

Prospective memory points in the other direction. It is the ability to remember that something needs to happen later.

You create an intention now:

“I need to send that document after lunch.”

Then you continue with your day.

For the intention to succeed, your brain eventually needs to bring it back into awareness at the right moment — without someone necessarily reminding you.

That makes prospective memory unusual. You are remembering something that has not happened yet.

Research generally defines prospective memory as remembering to perform an intended action in the future. Successful prospective remembering also depends on several other processes, including planning, retaining the intention, detecting the relevant cue and initiating the action. (PLOS)

🔗 Prospective Memory Is a Chain

“Remembering to do something” sounds like one mental event.

It usually is not.

Imagine deciding in the morning:

“When I get home tonight, I need to put the bins outside.”

Several things have to go right.

💭 Create the intention — remember that the bins need doing
📦 Retain it — the intention must survive while you do other things
🏠 Reach the relevant moment — arriving home
🔔 Notice the cue — home needs to trigger the intention

A breakdown anywhere in that chain can produce the same visible outcome:

The bins are still inside.

That is important because the solution depends on where the chain is breaking.

💾 Prospective Memory Is Not the Same as Working Memory

These two are easy to confuse.

Working memory keeps information temporarily active while you are using it.

For example:

“Go upstairs, get the charger and bring my glasses down.”

You need to keep those instructions active while moving through the house.

Prospective memory is different:

“When you go upstairs later, bring my glasses down.”

You do not need to think about the glasses continuously.

You need the intention to return later when the correct situation occurs.

🕰️ Time-Based Prospective Memory

Some intentions need to happen at a particular time.

These are usually called time-based prospective-memory tasks.

💊 take medication at 15:00
📞 call the dentist at 09:00 tomorrow
🍲 take something out of the oven in 30 minutes
📅 cancel a trial before Friday
🚗 leave home by 08:20

These tasks can be difficult because time itself does not always provide a strong external cue.

Nothing necessarily happens at 15:00 to tell your attention:

Now remember the medication.

You have to monitor time or encounter another cue that brings the intention back.

This creates an obvious connection with time perception, attention and executive functioning. Research into autistic prospective memory has often found stronger difficulties in time-based tasks than in event-based tasks, although newer adult studies show a much more mixed picture than a simple universal deficit. 🔔 Event-Based Prospective Memory

Other intentions are triggered by an event.

These are event-based.

“When I see Sophie, remind me to ask about Saturday.”

“When I get to the supermarket, buy batteries.”

“When I arrive home, put this letter by the front door.”

The event provides a cue.

That can make retrieval easier because something in the environment tells the brain:

This is the moment connected to that intention.

But the cue still has to be noticed and connected to the intended action. If your attention is captured elsewhere, even a good cue can pass without triggering anything.

⚡ Prospective Memory in ADHD

Prospective-memory difficulties make intuitive sense in ADHD because successful future remembering relies on several systems that can already be variable: attention, planning, working memory, time monitoring and self-initiation.

You may fully intend to do something, but another task takes over attention. The original intention stops being active and nothing in the environment brings it back strongly enough.

Typical experiences can include:

📅 remembering an appointment until the day becomes busy
💬 intending to answer a message later and forgetting it exists
💊 knowing medication needs taking but missing the time
📦 putting something somewhere “so I won’t forget” and walking past it
🛒 remembering the shopping item before and after the supermarket
📞 thinking about making a phone call repeatedly, but never while calling is possible

Adult ADHD research has found prospective-memory difficulties in more complex everyday-style tasks, with planning and execution playing important roles. More naturalistic ADHD research has also begun examining prospective memory in simulated everyday environments rather than relying only on simple laboratory memory tests. (PLOS)

That distinction matters.

The problem may not be:

“I cannot remember the information.”

It may be:

“The information does not become available when action is possible.”

⏰ ADHD, Time and “Later”

“Later” can be dangerous.

Not because you do not care.

Because later has no cue.

Consider:

“I’ll answer that email later.”

When exactly?

After lunch?

When you finish this task?

At 16:00?

When you next open your inbox?

Without a clear retrieval condition, the intention has to somehow reappear spontaneously.

A stronger intention is:

“After lunch, before I reopen my project, I will answer that email.”

Now the future action has an anchor.

☕ after coffee
🍽️ after lunch
🚪 when I arrive home
💻 when I open my laptop
🛏️ before getting into bed

This does not eliminate ADHD executive-function difficulties.

It gives prospective memory something concrete to attach to.

♾️ Prospective Memory in Autism

The autism research is interesting because it does not support a simple statement such as “autistic people have poor prospective memory.”

Older research and meta-analytic work found difficulties particularly in some time-based prospective-memory tasks. Some individual adult studies also found lower performance in more complex tasks. (PubMed Central (PMC))

But newer research complicates that picture.

A 2024 study of autistic and non-autistic adults across adulthood found similar prospective-memory performance between groups. A 2025 naturalistic study likewise found no clear everyday prospective-memory difficulty in autistic adults. Meanwhile, a 2026 study found lower event-based prospective-memory performance in its autistic group and linked prospective memory closely with executive functioning. (PubMed Central (PMC))

So the responsible conclusion is:

autistic prospective memory appears to depend heavily on the person, the task, the type of cue and the amount of executive support available.

That is much more useful than assuming a universal impairment.

🧩 Structure Can Change Memory Performance

This fits a broader pattern in autism research.

Performance can look different depending on how much structure the task provides.

A vague instruction such as:

“Remember to do this sometime later.”

places more responsibility on self-generated monitoring.

A clear environmental cue such as:

“When you put your laptop in your bag, put the document beside it.”

gives the intention more external structure.

That does not mean every autistic person needs external prompts.

It means memory performance should not be interpreted independently of how the task is designed.

Sometimes the person’s memory is being tested.

Sometimes their ability to independently create, monitor and retrieve an intention is being tested at the same time.

🔄 Prospective Memory in AuDHD

There is not yet a well-established scientific profile of prospective memory specifically for AuDHD.

But it is easy to see how several existing difficulties could interact.

An AuDHD adult may:

⚡ create an intention impulsively
🎯 become deeply focused elsewhere
⏳ lose awareness of time passing
🔄 struggle to switch when the moment arrives
📦 lose the intention from working memory
🚪 remember what needs doing but still struggle to initiate it

This creates an important distinction.

Sometimes the prospective-memory system succeeds:

“I remembered I needed to leave at 17:00.”

But the transition still does not happen.

That is no longer only a memory problem.

It may now involve task initiation, attention regulation or difficulty disengaging from the current activity.

One behaviour can contain several different mechanisms.

🚪 Remembering Is Not the Same as Doing

This is perhaps the most important distinction in the whole article.

Imagine your alarm goes off:

TAKE MEDICATION

You see it.

You remember.

Then you think:

“I’ll do it in a minute.”

You dismiss the alarm.

Twenty minutes later, the intention is gone again.

The prospective-memory cue technically worked.

The breakdown happened after retrieval.

This is why endlessly adding more reminders does not solve every memory problem.

Sometimes the issue is not remembering.

It is turning the remembered intention into action.

📱 Why Reminders Sometimes Fail

“Just set a reminder” is useful advice — but only when the reminder is designed well.

A reminder can fail because it appears:

❌ too early
❌ when you cannot act
❌ while you are deeply focused
❌ among twenty other notifications
❌ without saying what action is required
❌ once, with no way to recover if you dismiss it

Imagine receiving:

Dentist

at 08:00.

Does that mean call the dentist?

Go to the dentist?

Bring something?

Check an appointment?

Compare that with:

09:00 — call dentist to book annual check-up. Number in contact.

The second reminder does more of the executive work.

A good reminder does not merely say:

Remember.

It helps answer:

Remember what, when, where and what do I do next?

🎯 Put the Reminder Where Action Is Possible

Timing matters.

If you need to bring something when leaving home, a reminder at 21:00 the previous evening may help you prepare it.

But you may also need a second cue at the door.

If you need to call somewhere that opens at 09:00, an 07:30 reminder may be useless. You cannot perform the action yet.

By 09:00, the reminder is already history.

Try to align the cue with the action.

💊 medication reminder beside medication time
🚪 leaving reminder near the exit
🛒 shopping reminder when entering the shop
💻 work reminder when opening the computer
📞 phone reminder during actual opening hours

This is one of the central principles of good prospective-memory support:

The cue should appear when the behaviour is possible.

📍 Turn Time-Based Intentions Into Event-Based Ones

Where possible, attach an intention to something that already happens.

Instead of:

“Drink water at some point this morning.”

try:

“When I make my second coffee, I fill my water bottle.”

Instead of:

“Remember the medication tonight.”

try:

“When I brush my teeth, I take the medication.”

Instead of:

“Email the document later.”

try:

“When I reopen my laptop after lunch, I send the document before opening anything else.”

This turns an abstract future time into a concrete event.

The event becomes the retrieval cue.

🧠 Use “When X, Then Y”

One practical technique is making the intention highly specific:

When X happens, I will do Y.

This resembles what psychology calls an implementation intention.

Rather than:

“I need to remember the parcel.”

use:

“When I put on my shoes tomorrow morning, I pick up the parcel beside the door.”

Now the intention includes both cue and action.

Research has explored this kind of support in prospective-memory tasks, including autism, because making the link between future cue and behaviour more explicit can reduce how much has to be generated spontaneously later. (ScienceDirect)

📦 Make the Environment Remember for You

Sometimes the most reliable memory strategy is not a memory strategy at all.

It is changing the environment.

Need to return something?

Put it directly in front of the door.

Need to take medication with breakfast?

Keep it where breakfast happens, when safe and appropriate.

Need to bring paperwork to work?

Put it inside the bag rather than beside the bag.

📍 objects in the path of action
📝 visible notes at the relevant location
📅 calendar events with instructions
📱 location- or time-linked reminders
✅ recurring checklists
🎒 items packed before the transition begins

This is a form of external support rather than evidence that you should somehow learn to hold everything internally.

Your environment can function as part of your memory system.

📝 Capture the Intention Immediately

Prospective memory cannot retrieve an intention later if the intention disappears before it is properly captured.

You think:

“I need to ask Sarah about the invoice.”

If you are already doing something else, you may assume:

“I’ll remember.”

Often you will.

Until something else happens.

A low-friction capture system helps:

📱 one task inbox
📝 one note widget
🎙️ quick voice capture
📅 calendar for genuinely time-specific tasks
👥 message yourself
📌 visible paper where you actually look

The system matters less than how quickly you can use it.

If capturing a thought requires opening an app, selecting a project, choosing a category, adding a deadline and assigning a colour, the system itself may become an executive-function task.

📅 Calendars and Task Lists Solve Different Problems

A calendar answers:

When does this need to happen?

A task list answers:

What still needs doing?

Confusing the two can create problems.

If a task genuinely needs to happen Tuesday at 14:00, the calendar may be the right place.

If it simply needs to happen sometime this week, forcing it into Tuesday at 14:00 may create an artificial deadline that you repeatedly ignore.

Useful distinction:

📅 Calendar: appointments, deadlines, time-specific actions
Task list: actions that need doing but are flexible
🔔 Reminder: bring the intention into awareness
📝 Checklist: preserve a sequence or recurring routine

You do not need one tool to do every job.

📆 Why Appointments Are a Prospective-Memory Challenge

Appointments are particularly complicated because remembering the appointment is only one part of attending it.

You need to:

📅 know that it exists
⏰ remember it at the correct time
🧠 estimate when preparation must begin
🚿 complete whatever needs doing first
🚪 stop the current activity
🚗 allow travel time
📄 bring anything required
🔄 transition into the appointment

So missing an appointment does not automatically tell us which process failed.

The calendar entry may have been remembered perfectly.

Perhaps the problem was time estimation.

Or task switching.

Or the intention to start preparing did not reappear early enough.

❤️ Prospective Memory in Relationships

Prospective-memory failures can become emotionally painful because they are easily interpreted as information about how much someone cares.

“You remembered your hobby, but you forgot what I asked.”

“If this mattered to you, you would remember.”

“I shouldn’t have to remind you.”

The hurt behind those statements can be very real.

If one partner repeatedly forgets agreed tasks, the other may end up carrying more planning, monitoring and responsibility. Explaining the mechanism does not make that impact disappear.

But importance does not guarantee successful future retrieval.

A better solution targets reliability.

✅ explicitly assigned tasks
🔔 automated reminders
📝 important agreements in writing
🔁 recurring responsibilities automated where possible
🤝 regular planning rather than emergency prompting

The goal is not turning one partner into the other’s memory system.

Remember to follow up next week.

Bring this up in Thursday’s meeting.

Send the file when Alex replies.

Check this figure before publication.

Submit the form before the end of the month.

These demands become harder when work is fragmented by messages, meetings and interruptions.

Useful supports include:

Good workplace systems should not depend on every employee carrying dozens of delayed intentions in their head.

External structure can improve reliability without changing the underlying standard of work.

After a demanding day:

That means prospective-memory support may need to become stronger on low-capacity days.

A system that works beautifully when rested may not be robust enough during burnout or overload.

⚠️ Not Every Future-Memory Problem Is ADHD or Autism

Everyone forgets future intentions sometimes.

Prospective memory can also be affected by sleep deprivation, stress, depression, anxiety, medication, ageing, neurological conditions and other health factors.

A lifelong pattern of forgetting future intentions is different from a sudden substantial change.

If you begin missing important future actions far more often than usual, especially alongside broader memory problems, confusion or other cognitive changes, appropriate medical assessment may be warranted.

Do not automatically attribute every new memory problem to neurodivergence.

🌱 Stop Asking Your Brain to Remember at the Wrong Time

One of the most useful shifts is recognising that prospective memory is not just about how important something is.

You can care deeply about an intention.

Repeat it to yourself.

Fully expect to do it.

And then enter another context where that intention is no longer active.

Instead of asking:

“How do I make myself remember better?”

try asking:

🔔 What will remind me at the exact moment I can act?
📍 Where will I be when I need this information?
⏰ Does this require a time cue or an event cue?
🚪 Will I be able to act when the reminder appears?
📝 Can I capture the intention outside my head now?
🔄 Is switching likely to block action afterward?
📅 Can this recurring task be automated?

That shifts memory support from willpower toward design.

Prospective memory is what allows an intention created now to reappear when it matters later.

That makes it deeply relevant to everyday neurodivergent life. Medication, appointments, household responsibilities, messages, deadlines and small errands often depend on remembering something precisely when it is no longer in front of you.

ADHD can add difficulties involving attention, planning, time and initiation. Autism research suggests a more varied picture in which task structure, cue type and executive demands matter substantially.
