Inhibitory Control in ADHD, Autism & AuDHD: The Ability to Pause, Filter and Stop

That is inhibitory control.

🛑 Stopping Is Different From Not Starting

There are at least two useful ways inhibition can appear.

One is withholding a response before it happens.

❤️ Emotion Can Outrun Inhibition

Inhibitory control becomes especially important when emotions are intense.

You receive criticism.

Feel rejected.

Think someone has misunderstood you.

Sometimes it is better to remove the competing response before you need to inhibit it.

Suppose notifications repeatedly pull you out of deep work.

One option is:

“I need stronger discipline.”

Another is:

“My phone should not be producing twenty opportunities per hour for my attention to leave.”

The second changes the problem.

Now less inhibition is required.

Want to drink more water?

Put water in reach.

Want to check your phone less?

Put the phone farther away.

Want to avoid forgetting the intended task when distracted?

Leave the task visible.

Want to stop impulse purchases?

Remove stored payment information or introduce a waiting rule.

The principle is:

increase friction around the response you want less of and reduce friction around the response you want more of.

That can be more reliable than repeatedly testing willpower.

💬 Inhibitory Control in Conversations

Conversation is one of the places where inhibition becomes most socially visible.

You may:

If work requires constant self-interruption control simply to perform the actual job, the environment may be creating unnecessary executive load.

Impulsive behaviour can occur for many reasons.

A lifelong ADHD pattern is different from a sudden major change in impulse control.

If someone becomes dramatically more impulsive, disinhibited or behaviourally changed compared with their normal baseline — especially alongside major changes in sleep, mood, cognition or behaviour — it deserves appropriate professional assessment.

Not every new problem should automatically be explained by neurodivergence.

“Why do I have no self-control?”

make the problem smaller.

Ask:
